FDA Approves MED-EL’s Sonnet 3 Audio Processor for Cochlear Implants

MED-EL USA has earned U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for the new Sonnet 3 audio processor for its cochlear implants.

Sonnet 3 is touted as the company’s lightest and smallest behind-the-ear audio processor, two grams lighter and over 18% shorter than Sonnet 2 with AudioStream. It also features integrated, wireless direct streaming functions.

Sonnet 3’s ASM 3.0 tech automatically adjusts the processor’s settings to match the hearer’s environment. This includes reducing background noises and leveraging dual microphones to focus on conversations.

The device supports binaural streaming, where bilateral users can pair two Sonnet 3 processors or a Sonnet 3 and another audio processor with AudioStream. Music and phone calls can be streamed from compatible devices, including both Android and Apple. Further, users can stream audio from compatible smart TVs and digital media players, without wires or additional devices.

Sonnet 3 is anticipated to become available in early 2025. However, as of September 1, 2024, patients receiving a MED-EL cochlear implant can exchange one audio processor for the Sonnet 3.

Last month, the company received FDA approval for new indications and hearing preservation outcomes for its hearing implants.
